They said that it was once a hotel, and then apartments, and then I was asked if it was going to get torn down soon. Sadly, I get this question a lot. I confessed that I didn’t know, but this made me mentally schedule a weekend visit to take additional pictures. Detroit is rapidly changing, and my jury is out as to the extent of good, but I do know that like magic, one day it’s there, and the next day it’s not.
Recently I made a visit to Eastern Market and I found this wonderful mural inside a building next to Bert’s BBQ with all of the Motown greats. I used my Holga 135bc tlr and a flash to take the shot. The room was pitch black, and the film speed was ISO 50 and I was betting money that I’d come home with nothing. Holga – never second guess them because it totally came through.
A friend of mine didn’t know it at the time but they presented me with a challenge and that was you can’t do street photography with a Holga. I’m out to prove them wrong. There’s nothing better than challenges to keep the chemical fresh and the imagination flowing.
