A friend of mine recently asked me, “Do you shoot people?” My first thought as I answered, “yes,” was that I’ve been shooting too many landscapes, and that my people pictures are being overlooked. So I’ve decided to create a new portfolio of people. As I look back I’m sure that a few of my posts probably read as being precise. What might come across as being meticulous with my Holga is in fact my preference for using a tripod with it. The Holga is plastic thus light weight and handheld pictures will be a challenge.
I find people pictures a challenge in general so I surprised myself with how quickly I came up with my technique. I have not seen it done in a while, and rarely with a Holga. This question also brought back what I felt was a challenge by another friend who said that the Holga cannot do street photography. I disagreed with this although I have taken out the 135bc tlr and frankly, I have not liked any of the images well enough to post. I have not cracked it but I have not given up on cracking it. I think that the Holga is capable of street photography and eventually I will have images that will prove it. I hope.
The “how” for my new people portfolio came easily to me, but the street photography is still in the “what can I add to the mix?” phase. I am not into the obvious. I can feel my comfort zone slipping away which as an artist is the way it should be?
